How Ortho-K works Orthokeratology is a rigid gas permeable contact lens that one wears overnight to correct blurry distance vision during the day. Also called Ortho-K, the lenses flatten the front of the eye while asleep. While awake, the lenses are removed, but the eye remains flattened and vision is clear at all distances. Wearing Ortho-K lenses only improves vision for a short time. Once you stop wearing the lenses, the cornea slowly goes back to its normal shape and myopia comes back. Still, Ortho-K has been shown to reduce myopia progression.

What to expect from Ortho-KFitting an Ortho-K lens takes several visits. The patient will be seen for an initial evaluation to confirm they are a good candidate for ortho-k and then several times during the fitting process to make sure the lenses are fitting well. Typically, it takes a couple of weeks of wearing the lenses for maximum vision to be achieved. As these lenses reshape the eyes at night, skipped nights will reduce vision during the day. Patients can feel the lenses in their eyes, though over time they typically become more comfortable as patients get used to them.

Cost of Ortho-KOrtho-K is not covered by most vision insurance policies. For most patients in need of a vision solution, the cost of fitting Ortho-K lenses is a small price to pay for all-day clear vision. If you are interested in ortho-k lenses, we recommend scheduling an appointment with our optometrists for a consultation.

Who is good candidate for Ortho-KOrtho-K is typically used to slow the progression of myopia (near sightedness) in children. Because Ortho-K allows patients to be uncorrected during the day, myopic adults can also use these lenses at night instead of wearing contacts or glasses during the day.
