Other forms of Myopia ControlOther forms of Myopia Control are Low Dose Atropine Drops and Multifocal Contact lenses. Like Ortho K they are not typically covered by insurance, though if they have VSP we can use their contact lenses benefit for multifocal contacts and some medical insurances do cover the cost of atropine.

How Atropine drops worksAtropine is an eye drop that is normally used to dilate the pupil and relaxing the eye muscle responsible for focusing on near objects. In very low concentrations, atropine has shown to help slow down the progression of myopia in children. Although we don’t know exactly how it works we know that it can help reduce myopia progression on average by 50-55%.

Who is good candidate for Atropine dropsChildren who show rapid increases in their nearsightedness prescription or who show large amounts of nearsightedness at a young age are great candidates for myopia control. For patients who’s eyeglass prescription is outside of the treatable ranges for soft multifocal contact lenses and ortho-k, atropine is a great option.
