There are a number of ocular conditions that cause the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, to become irregular. When this happens vision is reduced, often quite severely. For patients with irregular corneas, Specialty Contact Lenses can improve vision much more than glasses and routine contacts. Specialty contact lenses improve vision by optically replacing the irregular shape of the cornea with a smooth, uniform surface that enables light to form a sharper image.
who should try specialty contact lenses
Specialty Contact Lenses can be used to improve vision for patients with the following conditions:
Pellucid Marginal Degeneration
Other corneal irregularities
What services does los gatos eye care provide?
Dr. Ilene Polhemus at Los Gatos Eye Care, has many years of experience in fitting specialty contact lenses. At a Specialty Contact Lens Fitting Exam, she will evaluate your vision and corneal condition in order to select a lens that will maximize your vision and comfort. Once a lens design has been selected, a lens will be ordered with your custom parameters. We will also conduct a training class in order to teach you how to properly apply, remove, and care for your specialty contact lenses.
Specialty Contact Lens Fitting process
If you have been told or think you could benefit from specialty lenses, please contact us to schedule a Specialty Contact Lens Evaluation & Fitting. At that visit we will evaluate the cornea and determine if specialty contact lenses can provide improved vision and quality of life. If specialty lenses could be of benefit, we will begin with fitting lenses to determine the best fit, power, and specifications. From there, we will order lenses and have you come back for a special class to learn how to insert and remove the lenses in addition to how to properly care for them. You will then be able to take the lenses home and wear them for a few weeks before returning for a followup to assess further.
