Omega 3 Fatty Acids (DHA/EPA)


Fats are a necessary part of the human diet. They maintain the integrity of the nervous system, fuel cells and boost the immune system. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in walnuts and oily, cold, dark fish such as tuna and salmon.

We know our diet is relatively deficient in omega-3 fatty acids. They cannot be produced by the body in sufficient amounts, and therefore must be obtained daily through the diet or supplementation. Most people do not regularly consume enough cold water fish. Even those who do eat fish are often not getting enough Omega-3's because much of the fish consumed today is farm - raised and lacks significant amounts of EPA and DHA.

For some patients with chronic dry eye, scientific evidence plus an increasing body of literature seem to indicate that Omega 3 fatty acids may be an important complementary treatment.

Omega 3 fatty acids have a thickening effect on the tear film. They also have a mild anti-inflammatory effect which helps to control the irritation present on the eyelids as a result of this condition. Scientific research over the past decade has shown that specifically targeted nutritional supplements can restore function to the glands that provide lubrication to the eye.

There is a difference between brands. The better the quality of the Omega 3 supplement, the more DHA/EPA which are the most helpful substances as related to the eyes/dry eyes. Two issues with fish oil are the contamination with heavy metals and rapid oxidation after processing. If poorly manufactured, fish oil will easily rancify causing “fish breath.” These rancid oils that are produced are a source of free radicals. Free radicals are harmful by-products produced by our bodies that cause damage to the cells in our bodies and are associated with many chronic diseases. Effective distillation of fish oil is critical to removing these impurities. It is recommended that patients use only supplements that address these issues.
