INSTRUCTIONS FOR KERATITIS SICCA
(DRY EYES)

Dry eye syndrome results primarily from compromise to either the quantity or quality of the tear film. Tears are composed of three layers. Deficiencies in any one of the components may create a tear film which is incapable of properly moistening the eye, resulting in drying out and symptomatic complaints. In addition, irregularities in the blink mechanism or conditions affecting the regularity of the ocular surface may further interfere with proper wetting of the cornea.

Dry Eye Syndrome can cause lots of suffering. It can also impair functional visual acuity, leading to a decreased ability to read and to drive, especially at night. Furthermore, it increases the risk of eye infection. As is the case with other diseases involving chronic pain, the constant pain of severe dry eye. It is essential to treat this condition to improve your eye health.

WARM COMPRESSES

Apply a warm washcloth over the eye for approximately 3-4 minutes in order to loosen oil and debris that has accumulated around the eyelid area. The washcloth should be very warm, but not hot enough to burn. This should be the first step in the lid hygiene.

Tranquileyes-Eye Hydrating Therapy might also be recommended for more severe cases of Chronic Blepharitis / Meibomitis.

ARTIFICIAL TEARS

The following is a list of recommended artificial tears for use during the day:

  • TheraTears
  • Blink
  • Optive
  • Systane
  • TheraTears Gel

Refresh PM or Lacrilube are recommended lubricating ointments to use at bedtime. To use the ointment, squeeze about ½” ribbon inside the lower eyelid and let melt to lubricate eye overnight.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

Research shows that omega-3 oils from the flaxseed plant and other sources can increase the amount of tear production from your lacrimal gland and help stabilize your current tear film. We recommend 2000mg Omega-2/day (High percentage of DHA/EPA recommended-Nordic Naturals)
